I am pleased to succeed the Unit Director of "Research Unit for Realization of Sustainable Society" within the second phase of Unexplored Science Research Unit after Professor Konishi of Institute of Advanced Energy.
This unit stands out from the other three units in the Research Coordination Alliance, Kyoto University, in terms of a fusion of the humanities and sciences, which is filled with dreams of interdisciplinary research. At the same time, the unit requires ideas and wisdom in how to proceed with projects, where to find the interface between research in sciences and humanities, and what exactly is being sought to be sustained.
The greatest advantage of the Research Coordination Alliance is that we can freely connect with many top-class research institutes in various fields involved in Kyoto University, and we can work on difficult problems that cannot be solved by a single institute. The ideal way to make the best use of this opportunity and to generate ideas and wisdom is to have as many meetings as possible to have people from the research institutes to discuss research topics, and we literally exchange opinions on the topics with natural interest and necessity in an interdisciplinary manner, and to start collaborative research.
Let me take chemistry as an example. While new highly functional materials are being developed one after another, we cannot avoid understanding and dealing with environmental issues that are unexpectedly posed, as well as laws and policies related to regulated compounds. The key to future industry-academia collaboration would be the need for materials designed on such a broad perspective.
We are starting a new unit activity with the aim of gathering and discussing the wisdom inherent in Kyoto University and overcoming the problems in a highly efficient manner, using these issues as a model case. Since this unit is a free activity base, we will also explore the nature of the interdisciplinary research itself by connecting with materials, energy, environment, big data, policy, fieldwork, and so on.

Unit Director Prof. Takeshi HASEGAWA
This Research Unit for Realization of Sustainable Society was established as one of the Research Units Exploring Future Horizons under the Kyoto University Research Coordination Alliance. This unit also is a successor of the Institute of Sustainability Science and following Research Unit for Development of Global Sustainability, and pursues the unique interdisciplinary studies for the investigation of sustainable survival of mankind and establishing new area of research, as well as deployment of the practical solution for sustainability into the real societies. We also intend to develop international collanoration network, invitation of foreign researchers, and promote the training of young research generation.
Adding to the previous members of Institute for Chemical Research, Institute of Advanced Energy, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere,Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Institute of Economic Research and Graduate School of Global Environment Studies, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies joint as the eights department.
